Mindy Meyers: The Woman In Pink

Mindy Meyers, a 22-year-old Orthodox Jewish law student at Touro College’s Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, is the Republican and Conservative candidate running to be the state Senator for the 21st district of New York against Democratic incumbent, Sen. Kevin Parker. This, itself, is not notable; however, her website, her stance on issues, and her lack of experience is worth discussing. When you visit her website, you are inundated with pink, and a midi version of LMFAO’s hit song, “Sexy and I Know It,” accompanied by her bedazzled slogan, “I’m Senator and I Know It.” Occupying her homepage are poorly Photoshopped pictures of her in a black suit standing behind a podium, with the seal of the United States bedazzled, in front of the United States’ flag, and another photo with her in a pink suit in front of the U.S. Capitol, not the State Capitol–she has admitted that it was an error. No, this isn’t the plot to another terrible ‘Legally Blonde’ sequel; this is real life. Though, I wonder if Mindy Meyers is aware of this fact. When asked about her website, she has said her opponent’s “boring” website is what inspired her. “Every website you go on just puts you to sleep. I’m trying to appeal to the younger generation to show them that younger people should get involved in politics and we do care about them. The Senate’s not just a bunch of old people,” said Ms. Meyers. While this website might appeal to younger audiences, 14-year-old girls are not the ideal demographic for a state senatorial candidate. You do not need to make a website reminiscent of a teenage girl running for class president to snatch the attention of the youth vote. There is a strategy that is universal; it’s run a campaign that addresses the issues in a way that your constituents agree with, and be able to promote the remedies for the plight of your constituents with charisma, even in the face of your opponent. The key to the youth vote is this strategy and social media. This is how Barrack Obama was successful with the youth in 2008.

Ms. Meyers does not try to deny that Reese Witherspoon’s character, Elle Woods, from the movie ‘Legally Blonde’ has been an inspirational figure in her life. Ms. Meyers says of Elle Woods, “She took pink to a top legal institution like Harvard, so why can’t I bring it to the Senate?” Well, Ms. Meyers, ‘Legally Blonde’ was a fictional movie, not a documentary. Besides, I thought you conservatives found the movies Hollywood makes abhorrent and “liberal” propaganda.

Mindy Meyers earned her Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from Touro College, “a Jewish-sponsored independent institution of higher learning.” She is now attending Touro College’s Law School, which claims to be secular, though, they close early on Fridays and all day Saturday in observance of Jewish tradition. Miss Meyers, an Orthodox Jew, says that she “intends to utilize her religious values and moral compass as her guide.” If this is the case, then let us look at what “moral” values the Torah–the first five books of the Bible–has to offer.

The Torah makes ridiculous laws such as men are not allowed to shave or trim the ends of their beards, you can’t eat meat that still has any blood in it, you aren’t allowed to tattoo your body, you can’t wear clothes with mixed fabrics, nor can you eat pork. I know many people who would be upset if Ms. Meyers’s “moral compass” influences her to pass legislation against such things. Some of the more nefarious “moral” stances in the Torah are its bigoted, and at times odious, attitude toward women and the LGBT community. Women who are on their period are unclean according to Jewish law–or God’s Law if you are a believer–and any one who sits where they sit, or has sex with a women while on her period, is unclean. To rid yourself of this uncleanliness you must bring two pigeons or two doves to the priest to be sacrificed. Women who are found to not be virgins on their wedding night are to be stoned to death by the men of the town. Adulterers are to suffer the same fate if they are found.

“A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this” (Deuteronomy 22:5)

“If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” (Leviticus 20:13)

If Mindy Meyers is indeed an Orthodox Jew as she claims, then at least we know where she stands on the LGBT issue; it’s clearly stated in Leviticus for us to read. If she doesn’t–which I have no reason to believe otherwise based on the statements from her website–then, she isn’t orthodox at all, is she?

This self-proclaimed “Diva of the District” lists five issues on her webpage that she seeks to tackle: stop and frisk, school choice, crime, poverty and unemployment, and abortion.

Mindy Meyers says, “[W]hen used appropriately a stop and frisk can help to protect the public against potential harm,” but that the “NYPD’s stop-and-frisk practices raise serious concerns over racial profiling, illegal stops and privacy rights.”

Mindy Meyers supports the conservative voucher program for public schools.

On the issue of crime, Ms. Meyers wants to work to reduce domestic violence against women and ensure they are provided with the necessary help they need. She also wants capital punishment for cop killers.

Under the serious issue of poverty and unemployment, Ms. Meyer says, “No more ‘Hunger Games’ in our District!” Beside the text is a picture of her dressed as the character Katniss, from the Hunger Games, with a toy bow and arrow. A repugnant move on her part. After she is done making a mockery of this issue with her photo, she does offer some remedies to the problem at hand. She “believes that summer youth employment programs should be restored” and “that career fairs and unemployment seminars should be more transparent and implemented throughout [her] district.”

On the issue of Abortion, Ms. Meyers says that women have choices, but she goes on to say:

“When faced with the prospect of an unwanted pregnancy, women can get the help they need, no matter what their economic status, race, religion and education. There are many support groups available to help women through their pregnancies, along with providing the proper medical attention they need. In addition, there are many couples who are longing to provide a warm and loving home for these children through adoption.”

So Ms. Meyers, it doesn’t sound like you believe women should have a choice at all. From her statement above, it appears that the only choice Ms. Meyer’s offers to women is to have the child. Only after the birth does a woman have a choice: she can keep the child, or give it up for adoption. Ms. Meyers should be forced to give her stance on birth control. We should know if she thinks that women have a choice on this issue or not.

When her critics point out her inexperience, Mindy retorts, “I can tell you one thing, I have no experience in corruption, . . . This is how politics has to change. There is always corruption, but I have the intention to follow my values and ensure that none of what happens in my district is corrupt.” This may be true. You are, however, corrupting the punctilios of politics with your ludicrous website, and cheapening of serious issues with pop-culture references. New York’s 21st district doesn’t need a candidate with pink suit and a BeDazzler; it needs a candidate that is going to represent the needs of the people. Ms. Meyers and her website make a mockery of the American democratic system, reducing it to a sideshow. Her website is a flash in the pan, and while this may have garnered her cheap attention, her 15 minutes of fame are dwindling. Unless she can perform well in debates against her opponent, I don’t see this campaign making it very far. At least if she fails come November, she can always take this sideshow to the circus at Fox “News.” They love to incorporate unqualified, failed political office seekers to their four-ring-act to pontificate on serious issues–though never is it more than hot air–to continuously misinform the public, divide our nation, and destroy our democracy; all for the cheap thrills of entertainment to increase ratings so Mr. Murdock and his cronies can siphon more money out of advertisers and the American public.

At least Mindy Meyers can say she has made this race entertaining, but that is not what politics needs. Politics needs to be relevant, not entertainment.
